Plein air painting

En plein air is a French expression which means "in open air," and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors. French Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir advocated en plein air painting, and much of their work was done outdoors, in the diffuse light provided by a large white umbrella.

The Bartram Trail

The William Bartram Scenic and Historic Highway,
a century-oak-framed window into "Old Florida," runs parallel to the St. Johns River in Northwest St. Johns County.

Painting the Regionsm venues are located off a five-mile stretch south of Mandarin and Julington Creek, in the communities of Fruit Cove, St. Johns and Switzerland, Florida.

The William Bartram Scenic Highway, part of a much longer "Bartram Trail," commemorates John and William Bartram’s time in St. Johns County during their extensive explorations of the Southeast between 1765 and 1774.

Today visitors might see eagles’ nests and diving ospreys, go hiking, boating or fishing, or sit by the river savoring gorgeous sunsets.  Vestiges of the area’s rich agricultural past can be glimpsed in historic buildings at Alpine Groves County Park and at the Bailey Family’s working cattle ranch.
